t is obvious there is something special about certain places. The villa at 21 Worcester Boulevard is one of these – from the bronze sculpture garden to its carefully refurbished interior – it is quite simply beautiful. The villa, owned by a family trust, is located opposite the Arts Centre and now available for lease as a commercial property through NAI Harcourts. Built in 1897 the villa is a designated Category 2 cottage by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, and has been used as a home, a gallery, flats and more recently offices, over its many years. It is also the home of the well-known Dyslexia Discovery Exhibit, an award winning exhibition of sculptures which was a joint venture between the family trust, the Cookie Time Charitable Trust and the Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand. Vacated by the trusts and the foundation after the earthquakes, the property has been refurbished in a way that has maintained its character and integrated the very latest in technologies. refurbishment, including a $50,000 grant from the Christchurch City Council Heritage Fund. Many of the original features have been retained including lead light windows, polished timber floors and ceiling plaster work. Guy Pope-Mayell, Chair of Trustees of the Cookie Time Charitable Trust, says the fireplaces and chimneys are of particular note. The tile fire surrounds were carefully retained to keep the original heritage look in the new gas fires, and the chimneys were lovingly restored with bespoke input from specialist craftsmen. The hidden side to the villa is the large

amount of work that has gone into making it an ideal business location. Along with the rebuilding work, has come strengthening and insulation, as well as new services including air conditioning, data and power cabling, new lighting and board room electronics. The villa is comprised of an office component spread over two areas, including spacious offices, a large boardroom, bathroom, full kitchen and a casual dining area. With separate entrances to both areas there are endless options as to how the space could be utilised. A large north facing courtyard is situated at the rear of the property, with offices and the dining area opening into this space. Also opening onto the courtyard is a contemporary studio apartment built five years ago - suitable for offices or accommodation it provides ideal accommodation for travelling staff, or for sublease.

Want to look tall and slim? Just go for a walk in the winter sun and observe your shadow. The moment of the Winter Solstice this year was at 10.51pm on 21 June giving us the shortest day when the sun had sunk to its lowest point in the sky resulting in our longest, skinniest shadows of the year. Of course the Winter Solstice (solstice is derived from the Latin phrase for “sun stands still”) itself only lasts a moment in time, so other terms are used for the day on which it occurs such as the ‘shortest day’. And short days they are at this time Angela Bennett, Editor of year - if, like me, you feel like the day is over in a flash, remember that we are having around five hours less light than our longest day in summer! But don’t let that get you down. In fact we have two things to celebrate at present – the first that the days are lengthening and second – that in fact the coldest days are about to come because even though the minutes of daylight are increasing, the earth’s surface continues to lose more energy than it receives from the sun (blame that on the rate it takes for the oceans to cool and warm up again), anyway the cooler weather to come will hopefully result in beautiful light, fluffy snow on the mountains and crisp, frosty, clear and sunny days in the city. While we celebrate the winter solstice with a few community and family events such as polar-plunge swims, winter festivals and of course the Maori New Year or Matariki, we don’t have a patch on the cavorting of the Ancients. Because ancient people saw that the sun kept sinking lower and lower, and that the amount of sunlight each day got less and less they figured it was possible that soon everything would be black, and life would end. So on the day the sun stopped and thereafter began to climb again in the sky there was course for much merriment! The Romans sure knew how to party, and their solstice feast of Saturnalia, honouring the God Saturn, was a weeklong December feast that involved drinking, eating and exchanging gifts. An interesting facet of the celebration was that the roles of master and servant were reversed for a few days. Roman masters would cater to their slaves or, at very least, consider them briefly to be equals. They also celebrated the lengthening of days following the solstice by paying homage to Mithra – an ancient Persian god of light. Long before then in Ireland around 3,200BC people constructed an ancient tomb in recognition of the solstice which is now known as Newgrange. Interestingly it was built 500 years before the Great Pyramids and more than 1000 years before Stonehenge. On the Winter Solstice, “a narrow beam of light penetrates the roof-box and reaches the floor of the chamber, gradually extending to the rear of the chamber”. The illumination that comes on the Winter Solstice lasts for 17 minutes – the construction was so accurate that the sun-beam could be used to determine the exact day of solstice. A fantastic feat of engineering considering it was built over 5000 years ago! Obviously these days we don’t scare so easily and take the transition of the sun’s sinking and beginning to climb in our sky towards the long days of summer for granted, but mid-winter is still a perfect time for a feast with family and friends or a good excuse to get out and about and enjoy winter’s many adventures.

Think about it… “In the depth of winter I finally learned that there within me lay an invincible summer.” - Albert Camus

nnah Stretton, with an Order of Merit for services to fashion, business and the community needs no introduction to most. Her eponymous newly refurbished Christchurch store in The Colombo is a regular haunt for fashionistas and her latest collection of winter fashion is truly inspiring. But Annah is not only a very successful designer and business woman with over 25 retail stores; she is also a very successful author with three books under her belt, and a business mentor and philanthropist who supports a wide range of charitable groups and organisations across New Zealand. Her newest initiative RAW assists disadvantaged women and those suffering domestic violence. I caught up with Annah to find out a little more about how she has achieved so much in a relatively short time frame…

What has influenced your design style the most? There have been so many influences; the collections each season are all based around a back story that may come from history, my varied environments, a movie, or a past or present high profile person or celebrity. We are also very focused on colour and femininity. I only wear our clothing but like to dress relatively simply. It's about great pieces that don't date, have strong colour and work well with a stable of basics... and then of course there is our famously versatile Flipit dress - our Rockstar!

What type of women do you like to design for? Real women; women who love colour, love feminine styles. Women who are comfortable in their own skin, don't bow to fashion trends, simply like to wear clothes that make them look fantastic and don't spend their wholes lives trying to lose 2kg before they make their next frock purchase.

What type of fabrics do you favour? Fabrics with lots of texture... colour, metals, florals, plaids... I don't follow trend, I just follow my heart and the prints and fabrics I love. I'm fortunate that I have a head designer Ali McIntosh that pretty much aligns with me and has been with me for over ten years. We have so much fun putting together the collections and I'm always so amazed at her fresh take on all of our elected back stories.

What fashion tips would you like to give Cantabrians? Our flagship store and best performing sales team are in the Colombo Mall. I know that Cantabrians love an event because they truly recognise that life needs to be celebrated, and now! Why wait to buy a great frock when you may not be around to enjoy it tomorrow? It’s advice they could, and should, give the rest of the country! Whether it be the wonderful racing festivities or the myriad of weddings and other occasions, Cantabrians know how to celebrate and I will be forever grateful for that! They have embraced Angela and Izy, our mother/daughter team that run the Colombo store, as their personal stylists and ensure 4 June, 26 2014 Metropol

moments as they arrive in your life, never letting them define you, dealing with the tough stuff and thriving, being okay about having a voice and making a very real contribution to the world you live in while always remaining true to yourself.

You are frequently in the media and on stage speaking about entrepreneurism and living fearlessly, what do you believe is one of the main aspects in life that holds women back? Doubt, lack of self-confidence, low selfesteem, not sitting comfortably in their own skin, being afraid of risk, low ranking on their own priority scale, putting everyone else first, being the last cab off the rank, having an ‘I don't deserve this’ mentality… Please stop me now!

What is one piece of advice you would like to give women who are not reaching their potential?

When did you first realise you had an interest in fashion? It was more about having an interest in art, painting, drawing and sculpture. I have completed part of an arts degree at Otago School of Fine Arts in Dunedin. Fashion appeared on the horizon when a series of life's opportunities eventually saw me working for a fashion company in the Waikato.

Annah Stretton

Annah’s boxers: The ‘avalanche of love’. they get liberal doses of their advice.

Last year you released your third book ‘Rock the Boat’ what inspired you to write it and what do you hope readers learn from it? One of the biggest challenges for most people is having the tough conversations, and I find that those are the conversations that can be so liberating, in that they move people forward from often stale situations. RTB was all about sharing strategies around difficult

JUST DO IT! You CAN have a great life, live your dream and be a great mother and partner; you do not have to compromise, you just have to prioritise and find your balance. It is achievable. Remember there are no medals handed out for being the family's sacrificial lamb - you get one go at life - go on and live it!

Your most recent initiative RAW (Reclaim Another Woman) is to assist disadvantaged women endeavouring to exit and grow from violent situations. Please briefly explain how RAW works: For years I have been involved in all sorts of charities, simply wanting to further the agenda of others, and put the heart into my company's operations. It was a meeting late last year with the services manager of the Waikato Refuge, Roni Albert, that got me thinking about RAW, in that the success of refuge was about rescue

and stabilising, yet most of the women returned, after their refuge stay, to the environments they knew, no matter how violent. Given the huge difficulties that they would face, to put in place what would extensively be unsupported life changes, I questioned if they would be strong enough to make them. RAW is a very simple concept, a matching of a significant other (someone who has all their ducks in a row and has lived a very different life) who is prepared to walk an educational journey, starting with a year, to get the mentee woman back into a contributing society. The pilot in the Waikato now has over 80 matches with all the women in education, walking towards a very different end goal, all at this stage have been successful. Everyone needs someone, as well as a focus and a purpose, some tough love and a ‘can do’ attitude. We have simply seen the demographic that for too long has been invisible to so many of us.

Has it been difficult to connect with a group that live such a different lifestyle to your own? Absolutely, we have more mentors (significant others) that are waiting to be matched, than RAW women. But as we saw in the Waikato it simply takes time to get the women into the organisation and trusting the process; remember these are women who have been let down all their lives.

How has RAW been received by women who mentor and the mentees to date? Incredibly! I had no idea that we would get so many successful matches and advance so many women so quickly. We have police officers supporting women that have strong criminal backgrounds, a patent attorney supporting a woman from the dental profession wanting to advance a patent idea. A chef supporting a budding cook, a school principal supporting a woman to get into nursing and many, many more.

How can women get involved with RAW in Christchurch? They can log on to www.raw.org.nz and email us through the ‘be supported’ or ‘give support’ or ‘become a friend of RAW’ tabs. Or email rebecca@raw.org.nz. RAW also has a Facebook page: Reclaim another woman.

What is your proudest achievement? My two children Sam and Edward who have now both completed commerce degrees at Otago and are now travelling the world. They are my inspiration, have my absolute love and are my biggest critics and levellers. Closely followed by my initiation of RAW, and my mentor relationship with Krystal.

If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Start earlier, you can be anything you want. Educate well and remain focused on the business type subjects, they are the advancers in life.

What were you doing the last time the thought went through your head “I shouldn’t be doing this”? Buying a second white boxer pup, I now have two girl white boxer pups that have just turned a year old. They need so much love and attention and if we let them they both sleep on the bed, my man calls this the 'avalanche of love'.

What are you like at parties? Variable. Great with close friends; first to exit in large crowds.

What is next on your wish list? To have a glass of wine with Richard Branson (I know he'd love RAW ). I guess I need to start getting more proactive on social media... dare to dream and all that!

First Rutherford documentary

A

mazingly, until now, there has never been a full documentary on Nobel Prize winner and University of Canterbury physicist Ernest Rutherford. University of Canterbury researcher Dr John Campbell has produced the Rutherford Documentary, which is based on his book, Rutherford Scientist Supreme. Research spanning a quarter of a century went into material for the book. Dr Campbell has just screened on campus the first episode, The Apprentice, which covers Rutherford's early life and work in New Zealand and Canterbury College, plus his pioneering wireless telegraphy work in England. Episode one also shows general student life and graduation ceremonies of Canterbury College from more than 120 years ago. Rutherford received the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1908, 18 years after starting as a student at the University of Canterbury, formerly known as Canterbury College. “Lord Rutherford is internationally New Zealand's most famous son, the first Nobel Prize recipient for research performed in Canada and probably the most illustrious British scientist of the first half of the 20th century,” Dr Campbell says.

John Kapa reveals the art of Gyotaku – fish rubbings…

“O

n a trawler in the middle of the ocean near the Chatham rise, the research vessel Kaharoa from National Institute of Water and Atmosphere (NIWA), heaved aboard its catch after hours of winding in the trawl net,” says John Kapa. “I stood there watching the net come aboard, and as a researcher working for NIWA, I was interested in the types of fish we would find. “Then I saw a Japanese man, who was researching with us, race down to see the fish laid out on the deck. More interesting was that he was sorting the fish with great enthusiasm. Then I saw him take some fish to the side, placing something over them and rubbing them. What I had just witnessed was the art of Gyotaku (Japanese , from gyo "fish" + taku "rubbing") a traditional method of Japanese fish printing, dating from the mid-1800s. “I had already had an interest in fish, but not only for the table. I was also a member of the Dive Research team for NIWA. In my recreational time I spent vast periods of my time spear fishing or collecting samples. “The combination of spending over seven years diving and researching fish, as well as other marine animals, and the love of art, made a great combination. Witnessing the process of Gyotaku gave way to lots of time experimenting with the technique and perfecting it.”

It requires a lot of patience to prepare the fish, position it, apply a tried paint and then the specific rice paper. Of course the skill is to then “rub” the fish to get a perfect image. As John found out, “it’s not just about getting a fish and slapping paint on it and then throwing paper on it”. It requires a lot of patience to prepare the fish, position it, apply a tried paint and then the specific rice paper. Of course the skill is to then “rub” the fish to get a perfect image. Often it can take many attempts, as the image might

not take, or take poorly. Additionally the ink may be too light, too dark, and or you can get double images of the fish as a result of the paper moving around. However, if you get it right you end up with incredible art. The details of the fish are often incredibly detailed and quite breath-taking. John can often get more than three prints from a fish.

“Currently I have three commissioned fish prints to do, and seem to be selling all sorts of types of fish images, from Blue Maomao to my favourite fish, the Giant Boar fish (it looks so odd). I really enjoy this art work and it reminds me of the vast amounts of time I spent either swimming with them, or eating them!” John’s art work has been applied to trophy snapper and these have been on the cover of New Zealand fishing magazines. Some have been auctioned and others commissioned. They make fantastic gifts for all who enjoy fish and fishing and there’s a certain elegance about the prints. They are very lifelike. If you would like to know more or buy this unique fish art, pieces range anywhere from $80 - $800, John can be contacted on Facebook under Fish Prints (Aotearoa NZ), johnkapa@gmail.com and on 021 025 82487.

Fairytale hijinks with an improv' twist

C

anterbury Children's Theatre has taken a different path for this school holiday production.

O

nce Upon a Happy Ending has the basis of your usual fairytale but has a few new twists and turns… Each performance will be different from the last. For each show the audience will choose the name of the villain, the name of the fairytale kingdom in which the story is set, and the magical creature which holds the power to break the kingdom's curse. They also get to choose how the hero saves the kingdom from the curse and the object needed for this. There are seven actors involved in the show and for each performance the audience chooses which actor plays which part. The cast of actors never hold back. They know the essence of children's theatre demands giving 100 per cent all of the time. As usual with Canterbury Children's Theatre

Customers drive parking changes C

hristchurch Airport car parking changes which came into effect on 9 June are what customers said they want. Chief Commercial Officer Blair Forgie says a year-long review considered feedback from more than 1500 customers and included researchers riding in visitors' cars to understand decisions they made as they chose a parking space. “Our customers told us parking priorities at the airport are choice, cost and convenience, assisted by much clearer signage,” says Mr Forgie. “We have responded with a new range of car parking choices which give travellers what they said they want.” Mr Forgie says changes include new car parking choices, competitive pricing, new signage and

colour coding to define the different areas. “We wanted to make it easy for people to find the best park for their visit,” he says. “We have new parking choices, including a new car park called Econopark, for people travelling on a budget or wanting to park on the airport for longer periods of time. “We have extended the free parking time to 15 minutes in the Express Park. In that building, it costs only $4 for a 40-minute stay, which makes parking cheaper for lots of people. “We have created more mobility parks and new family parks because they were asked for.” Mr Forgie says people driving to the airport should consider how long they want to be there and which car park will suit their needs. “We thought about people coming to deliver or collect people to or from flights, as well as those who want to leave their car parked securely while they go away for a while,” he

so the drop-off area, now known as The Loop, can be used as it was intended. “The Loop is for people stopping only long enough to let someone out of their car or collect someone waiting on the footpath,” says Mr Forgie. “There's no waiting or parking in that area, so people needing a few more minutes are asked to move to the P15 free parking areas.” Staff known as Parking Pals, in pink vests, are roaming the car park areas until the end of July, answering questions and providing direction. Christchurch Airport will shortly launch its next parking enhancement – the ability to pre-book and pay for airport car parking online, something business travellers asked for. Structured Woman for winter

iann Bellis’ winter range is called ‘Structured Woman’ and is inspired by iconic architecture around the world. It follows a successful inaugural launch collection based around a balmy Mediterranean summer. For her brand liann bellis, designer Leanne Greaves says structure is a fundamental building block for design.

“I often refer to a Coco Chanel statement, ‘fashion is architecture: it is a matter of proportions’. I was eager to explore this avenue for my second collection,” says Leanne. The sophisticated range takes a twist on classic designs from the 1920s through to the 1950s using tailored styling to create a structured aesthetic. Everything is simple and uncluttered with clean lines and block colouring, allowing the wearer to be enhanced by each garment. “I am somewhat fixated on long line tops and elements that elongate the body, such

as a collar that becomes a hood, or cropped tops worn over skirts that achieve a long linear look,” says Leanne. True to the architectural reference point, each style has a familiar name, such as the Sphinx Top, the Eiffel Knit Top, the Empire Coat, and the Notre Dame Top. A moody, monotone palette of French navy, Merlot red and black contrasted against electric blue, topaz, cherry red and burnt orange enliven the collection. In line with the liann bellis philosophy of comfort combined with style, the quality garments are easily serviceable and wearable.

Meet Rodney - the magician of hair

I

nner beauty is great, but let’s face it, a few face framing highlights, a striking ombre look, or some gorgeous mermaid waves for a night out never hurts. And when you want a job done well, Rodney Upston is the man to see. Operating from Natural Attraction, tucked comfortably in next to Ed Hopper Café and

Bar in Riccarton’s Windmill Centre, Rodney’s focus is on creating the hair to match the lifestyle. “It’s all about getting 80 percent of the hair for 20 percent of the effort,” he laughs. “Everyone wants Hollywood hair, but when you’re in Hollywood you spend four hours getting your hair done every day.” And nobody has time for that! Thankfully Rodney can teach you all the tricks of the trade so you can look like you’ve just stepped off the catwalk, with minimal time and fuss. He has been using Wella products for more than 13 years and is highly proficient in what the company offers in both their colour and styling ranges, ensuring he can recommend the best products and latest styling tips. Rodney regularly attends Wella workshops and photo competitions, as well as keeping up with the trends both here and overseas to ensure he is up with the play. “Christchurch is fairly conservative, so it’s great to be able to tweak and tame the looks you might see in Sydney or Melbourne.” Owned by Sue Wootten for more than 25 years, the stylish, modern salon offers much more than somewhere to get your hair done. It’s a place to relax, unwind and offload. “The role of a hairdresser is one part hair and one part counsellor,” Rodney laughs. “What we offer here is somewhere for people to just relax and have a coffee after a rough day. With every single customer that walks in our door we aim for them to leave happier and more relaxed than when they walked in.” It’s a role which fosters strong

t may be the first step in a new career, improving your personal skills, or simply having a bit of fun – the short courses on offer at Kristen Stewart School of Make-up have been designed to cater for everyone.

For those who wish to decide if a potential career in make-up artistry is right for them, KSSM's Pro Basics course is a great starting point. The two day intensive foundation course

22 June, 26 2014 Metropol

is held over the weekend to make it accessible to all, and teaches the basics of how to apply make-up. Stewart says the course is suited to all those interested in make-up artistry, whether this is beginners, those already working in the industry who wish to brush up on their skills, or for the self-taught. Having fun however is the aim of both the Teen Scene and Girls Making Up short courses. With Teen Scene a new addition, Stewart says it is a workshop that she has been wanting to provide for some time. The workshop teaches young women not only make-up fundamentals, but also what make-up is appropriate, how to dress it up when you need too, and all important skin care. Each workshop runs over an hour and a half, catering for up to 10 happy teenagers, and is the ideal event for celebrations such as birthday parties. Platters of snacks and refreshments are included as part of the package. Girls Making Up follows a similar theme giving women the opportunity to learn better

make-up techniques while having some fun over a glass of complimentary bubbles. With a maximum group size of ten, the workshop has proven to be perfect for a hen's night and other special occasions.

The short courses build on the very successful Diploma of Make-up Artistry run through the school. Also on offer is having the entire KSSM studio to yourself, with the Book the Boutique option. Best suited to larger wedding parties it allows groups to have their perfect look created in a private space,

with Corkin + Friends providing specialist hair styling. The short courses build on the very successful Diploma of Make-up Artistry run through the school. The full time Diploma is an intensive eight-week programme with classes every day, with the part time Diploma also proving to be very popular. Classes are taken by Stewart herself and also new team member Claire Randall, whose main role at KSSM is leading the Part Time Diploma and short course classes. A graduate herself from the full time Diploma in 2012, Randall worked as a freelance makeup artist before joining KSSM at the start of the year. For Stewart it is important that the style and techniques taught are consistent, with herself and Randall working well together to provide their students with the skills to take their make-up career wherever they wish.

WARM UP for Winter

EVERYDAY

477 Ferry Rd, Woolston 0274 594 052

esigning clothes that she would love to wear is the inspiration behind Repertoire Lounge. For designer Lee Kleiman the idea for the new Lounge collection was wanting something to wear on the weekend - clothing for a mother watching her child’s sports games, running them to school, or just having ‘me’ time. Co-founder and co-director of Repertoire, Lee has been designing for the range since it began seven years ago. With the feeling that the surf brands were too young and not womanly enough she wanted to develop a high quality New Zealand made collection, with interchangeable pieces that created dozens of casual chic outfits. The resulting Lounge range is an extension of Lee herself, made up of clothes she loves to wear and as such a natural thing for her to design. The first of two Lounge collections for winter will be in store in the middle of June, with the second collection arriving in July both are limited collections, and are set to sell out fast. Colour and patterns are a large part of Lee’s inspiration for all her Repertoire designs. A fabric or print she loves becomes the starting point, and forms the palette around which she builds the story and the collection. There has been a move towards producing many exclusive in house patterns for Lee, with influence also coming from international trends. The Lounge range is the result of her many years of experience within the fashion industry, including studying at the London College of Fashion and attending fashion shows all over the world, before becoming an

integral part of the team at Repertoire. All of the Repertoire range is manufactured in New Zealand, with samples sewn from their home base in Mount Manganui, complicated designs completed by talented seamstresses across the country, and the bulk of the manufacturing taking place in Auckland. With nine stores nationwide, the Christchurch store at The Colombo is their only South Island location. Opening their doors to the South Island was a sense of real achievement for the fashion house. It was a natural progression to cater to their strong South Island base of customers who had previously made use of both their eboutique, and North Island stores while on

holiday. Special attention is paid to the differing climate, and this winter they have introduced their largest coat range. The Christchurch store, located in The Colombo in Sydenham, also offers personal styling services, with store manager Jenny selected to attend styling courses with an international stylist. Appointments for personal styling are also available with Meghan, Repertoire’s head stylist, co-director and owner. For Repertoire it is all about inspiring and encouraging women, with the ‘feel good’ Lounge collection designed to make women feel as beautiful on the outside as they are on the inside.

New food, fashion, and vintage treats

F

resh fashion, design and food is what The Colombo does best – and hosting a collection of new works from CPIT students is the ideal way to show their support for the local industry. Third year fashion design and technology students will be sharing their collection, FORM 2014, with the public, making use of a venue supplied by The Colombo. FORM will showcase student collections through photos, ‘lookbooks’ and racks of garments – some of which will be for sale. The collections were directed by the industry partners the students completed their work experience with, including leading New Zealand labels Karen Walker, Nom*D and Lonely Hearts. With the collection an annual event, this is the first year that the students’ work has been showcased in a public space. For The Colombo, sharing their space is all about letting young students know that they have the opportunity to study fashion at a high level in Christchurch. CPIT describe their fashion programmes as technically challenging and designed to produce versatile graduates who are prepared for work in the industry.

FORM will showcase student collections through photos, ‘lookbooks’ and racks of garments – some of which will be for sale. The exhibition runs over a week, from Friday 4 July until Thursday 10 July. New food is also on the scene, with ‘come find us’ the call to all soup lovers. Hunt out Sooped for a warm welcome soup as it should be – freshly made from organic seasonal ingredients, and a bowl full of colour and beauty. “Three fresh soups every day,” says co-owner Gerry Irvine. He and business partner Mathias Blatner are the masterminds behind the soup menu, mixing it up from old favourites of roasted pumpkin, potato and leek, to mint and pea. Soup guest appearances created by Guilio Sturla will also be a regular feature. Chef at the well-known Roots restaurant in Lyttelton, Irvine says that Sturla’s parsnip and ginger creation has already proven to be a hit. Stock for all the soups are made using the very best quality freshly made stock also provided by Roots, and a selection of bread supplied by Vic’s Bakehouse. Vintage treats are also in store at the newly opened Skout, which specialise in vintage cravings. This includes the very gorgeous Lazybones range, boasting beautiful 100% linen dresses - ask to try the Alice style! On offer is a selection of fabulous books which will guarantee a laugh on the coffee table, very cool prints, vintage clothing, toys and jewellery. Visit The Colombo to make sure you get a look at the city’s new creative talent, a taste of Sooped’s winter comfort food and gorgeous vintage treats for your home.

A collaborative approach to cosmetic care

W

orking together to create a care plan specific to your needs is the starting point for any consultation at Face Value. “It’s a good time of year to look at a cosmetic medical care plan,” says Dr Philip Frost.

Cultivating a garden is a labour intensive act of love. Our Gardeners Collection offers deep nourishment for the hardworking bodies that beautify the outdoors. These products are splendidly restorative for gardeners & non gardeners alike.

Merivale Mall

348 7342

Face Value offers a free and completely no obligation consultation, which Dr Frost sees as a very important part of ensuring that the best care is received. The consultation process includes taking photos from a range of angles including those which we rarely see ourselves from, but others do. Together any key areas of concern are identified. “People come along with a primary area of concern,” he explains, “with the most common being frown lines or crow’s feet.” The final care plan is very much a shared decision making process, and will detail results that the client would like to achieve, working within their budget. For many this will include improving skin tone and face volume, and decreasing wrinkles, with the consultation exploring and explaining all options available. The care plan also includes skin care advice– the basics of good hydration and nutrition, cessation of smoking and the use of Dr Frost’s recommended skin cosmeceutical ranges. Dr Frost is senior member of the New Zealand Society of Cosmetic Medicine, and is committed to keeping his skills constantly up to date with the latest techniques. He believes in a collaborative approach to decision making, with the premise that less is more cosmetic medicine that does not try to change a face but to make it look fresh for a client’s age, following European trends. “It’s very much about a soft, natural result,” says Dr Frost, who most importantly administers all of the treatments himself. Face Value specialises in non-surgical cosmetic medical treatments such as Botox®, Dysport and dermal fillers. If Dr Frost feels

that a client would benefit from other specialists, such as dermatologists or plastic surgeons, he will refer them on to the best colleague for the job whilst retaining oversight of the client’s full care plan. “It’s really a journey,” says Dr Frost, “with a prescription of care set out over a period of time of careful cosmetic medical treatment, followed by maintenance through ongoing care.”

Dr Phil Frost, owner/director

He believes in a collaborative approach to decision making, with the premise that less is more - cosmetic medicine that does not try to change a face but to make it look fresh for a client’s age, following European trends.

The earlier treatment is started the easier it is to maintain results. For example the use of Botox and dermal fillers have an additive gain with ongoing treatments - this means that for most, maintenance treatments are only required two to three times a year. G

interest in the business; that not only reflects her personality but her passion for “something a little different”. She has been in the industry since 1983 and was persuaded by her husband to start her own business in 1994. Her love of glamorous and unique glasses was quickly realised by others asking for her “groovy glasses” and the rest is history.

roovy Glasses… sounds like a fun place to visit, doesn’t it? Visiting an optometrist to get a new pair of glasses can be overwhelming but Trudy and her team ensure your experience will not only be worthwhile but enjoyable as well.

Her love of glamorous and unique glasses was quickly realised by others asking for her “groovy glasses” and the rest is history.

Groovy Glasses provide unique, trendy and adventurous eyewear which is as individual as their business. Many frames are handmade to the highest quality by international designers; not the typical clothing designers, but those of a specialist spectacle nature. Middle of the road glasses are nowhere to be seen; you will only find exquisite, sophisticated, sometimes quirky frames. What sets Groovy Glasses apart from the rest is their staff. With zero staff turnover you’ll be sure to see the same familiar faces year after year. Groovy Glasses must be doing something right with a stable staff who just don’t want to leave! Once you meet the team, you’ll quickly learn why their clients keep coming back. The team are genuinely interested in ensuring you feel at ease and are paired up with the best glasses for you. Groovy Glasses endeavour to make their workplace as much like a home as possible. With jazz music, complimentary sweets, original artwork and fresh flowers you’ll never want to leave; just like the staff! Independent optometrists are few and far between these days. Trudy McBeath is the owner/operator and has long term invested

Groovy Glasses philosophy number one: “To change the purchase of glasses and process of having your eyes examined from being a negative experience into being a positive, creative, experience – in other words to make it fun”. When you book an appointment at Groovy Glasses you will be examined by an experienced, friendly and knowledgeable optometrist who will be sure to answer all your questions. They allow 45 minutes with the optometrist for each eye exam so you don't have to feel rushed. If you need an eye examination, some new frames or contact lenses then Groovy Glasses is the way to go! Groovy Glasses is located on Bath Street in the CBD and open six days a week. For more information check out their groovy website at www.groovy.co.nz or give Trudy and the team a call to make an appointment on (03) 379 8747. New and exciting things are on the horizon for Groovy Glasses so keep an eye on their website for updates. That’s groovy baby!

Skin rejuvenation with IPL I PL has been around for many years, yet there are still people who are unaware of what IPL is and how it could help them achieve beautiful, clear skin. The Skin Rejuvenation Clinic at 80 Wairakei Road is excited to have the latest IPL machine made by Lumenis. Lumenis is the worldwide leader of IPL technology and has been the gold standard of medical aesthetic devices since 1973. IPL stands for intense pulsed light. A lot of people think that IPL treatments are “laser treatments” and even though the principles are similar, IPL treatments use light of many wavelengths to target cells of certain colours in the skin. This light energy is converted into heat energy, which damages the target cells such as the superficial broken blood vessels and brown age/sun spots. The great thing about IPL is that it targets the lower layers of the skin without affecting the top layers so there is minimal downtime (the skin can be a little pink for 2-24 hours afterwards) making it an ideal lunch-time procedure. After the treatment the pigmented areas will darken. The body's natural processes then clear the lesion debris, giving the skin a more even and youthful appearance. Clients always want to know how many treatments they will need to achieve their

desired result and unfortunately it is impossible to say exactly. Most people will see a significant improvement in their skin after 3 treatments but will need up to 5 or 6 to see the full benefit. IPL is recommended for removing pigment and superficial blood vessels but due to the heat that it puts into the skin it also stimulates collagen production and clients notice that not only is their skin

clearer and brighter but it is also firmer and the pores are smaller. Winter is the ideal time for IPL. Treatments can't be done if people have tanned in the three weeks prior (or used fake tan on their face) and it is important to use a good SPF30+ sunscreen before and after having treatments done. IPL is also used for permanent hair reduction as it can target the brown pigment of the hair deep in the hair follicle. Once again several treatments are required as it can only target hair follicles that are in an active (anagen) growth phase. The new IPL at the Skin Rejuvenation Clinic is called the M22 and looks a little bit like R2D2 from Star Wars, but if you have ever had an IPL treatment before and thought it was painful (older IPL treatments used to feel a bit snappy) you will be pleasantly surprised as the M22 has a Sapphire cooling system to maximize comfort.

Redness prior to IPL skin treatment, Courtesy of B.Kent Remington M.D.

Rosacea prior to IPL treatment, Courtesy of Mariela Nazar, M.D.

These are conditions that can all be treated by IPL but due to the Medical Council of New Zealand doctors aren't allowed to show ‘after’ photos.

More than just a health store

T

here is over 65 years of experience inside the doors of Health 2000 in Barrington. The team of seven staff each bring different strengths to the store, and a combined knowledge and experience which means the very best advice on natural health. One of the three naturopaths and manager of the store, Autumn Donovan has been with the team for three years and runs her own part time naturopathic practice. Autumn is a degree qualified registered naturopath and herbalist - she is dedicated to holistic healthcare and prevention of disease and with her knowledge and experience she uses effective natural therapies to improve health. At a

Naturopathic consultation Autumn can set for you a treatment program using diet, lifestyle, supplements, nutritional and herbal medicine to improve health and wellbeing. Helen Clarke is an experienced naturopath that works in the shop and has her own clinic where she works as a naturopath and holistic health practitioner - an approach that takes the broadest possible view of illness and disease, identifying both internal and external causes. This understanding has developed a new way of caring for people and the world in which we live, employing a multi-dimensional approach using therapeutic applications, compresses, hydrotherapy, massage and infrared sauna treatments. Autumn, alongside herbalist/naturopath Robyn Church, is able to prescribe individualised herbal formulas from the stores herbal dispensary. Together with team members Kathy Meehan, a reflexologist who runs her own private reflexology practice, Pam Curtain, Josie Mc Neil and Hayley Makay, there is always someone on the shop floor who is available to offer expert advice.

Great haircuts for the whole family

T

win traditional barber’s poles frame the entrance to Haircuts for Haircuts in the South City Centre. Further tokens inside the salon to a barber’s shop heritage are the framed cut-throat razors on one wall and the old-style newsprint wallpaper behind the basin. But the past stops there. The salon itself is modern and stylish with black cutting chairs in front of grey-framed mirrors, black couches for waiting clients, pale wood-grained flooring and a striking feature wall of a grey/black swirling wallpaper design. For people wanting good haircuts at a reasonable price Haircuts for Haircuts is one of the longest-established and most popular haircutting salons in Christchurch. There are actually two salons with that name – one at South City and the other at the Bush Inn Centre. Michelle Canovan is an original owner of both salons and the Bush Inn Centre salon is now celebrating its 25th year of business – that’s an impressive and telling record. Currently the Bush Inn Centre salon features old-style barbers’ chairs and other memorabilia, but just like its South City cousin, it will soon be brought into the 21st century with a more contemporary look. The salon will not close while the renovations take place, but will simply re-locate to a temporary position in the mall. Haircuts for Haircuts’ motto is “reasonably priced haircuts for the entire family” and you can be assured of a great haircut at the salons. All the hairdressers are fully qualified senior stylists and Michelle puts any new applicants through a rigorous practical test to an exacting standard before she will appoint them. There

Michelle and the team

are a number of long-serving and very experienced staff in the salons – one has over 17 years with the business and several others have been with Michelle for over 10 years. Haircuts for Haircuts caters for all age groups from pre-schoolers to pensioners, male and female and the clientele comes from all walks of life. “We’ve seen lots of tourists lately and also quite a few of the Irish men who are working on the city rebuild,” says Michelle. The service is friendly, professional and efficient and the conversation flows, making the whole process very enjoyable. “The salons are busy with five staff cutting at weekends and four or five during the week, but no appointment is necessary. If people do have to wait for a short while, we have a TV tuned to music channels and newspapers and magazines available to keep them occupied.” You can contact the South City salon on 366 0619 and the Bush Inn salon on 348 7008. Both salons are open seven days and also operate a loyalty card system with every sixth cut free to regular clients. In addition, pensioner and student discounts are offered.

S

elaks Roast Day is coming up on Sunday 3 August 2014. It's all about gathering loved ones together and recapturing all the fun, fanfare and good times that go with a Sunday roast. In a series of recipes, in preparation for Roast Day, this issue Metropol presents Nici Wickes' wonderful chicken roast and gooey citrus pudding… RECIPE

1 tsp salt

Lemon & Thyme Roast Chook

olive oil

Wine match: Selaks Reserve Hawke's Bay Chardonnay

1 cup Selaks Reserve Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Prep Time: 10 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients 6 – 8 potatoes cut lengthways into 6 pieces 2 brown onions, peeled and sliced roughly 1 free range chicken – spine removed, butterflied 3 lemons, cut into thin slices 2 Tbsp fresh thyme (or 1Tbsp dried)

½ cup stock Method Pre-heat oven to 220 degrees Celsius. Take a large roasting dish and scatter the potatoes and onion slices over the bottom. Place butterflied chicken on top, drizzle in olive oil, sprinkle with salt and thyme. Scatter the lemon slices over the chicken and another splash of olive oil. Pour the wine and stock into the roasting dish. Cover with a double layer of foil and roast for 45 minutes, uncovered for the last 10 minutes, until

the chicken is golden brown and cooked through. The onions and lemons will have caramelized, the potatoes will be soft and the bottom of the roasting pan sticky and delicious with a lemony glaze. Serve with a simple green salad. RECIPE

Nici's Gooey Citrus Self-Saucing pudding Wine match: Selaks Reserve Gisborne Waipara Dessert Wine Prep Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 45 – 55 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients 100g softened butter 1 cup caster sugar 4 eggs, separated and at room temperature Zest and juice of 2 lemons Zest and juice of 3 oranges ½ cup plain flour 400 mls (1 ¾ cups) milk Method Preheat the oven to 150 degrees Celsius. Grease

a ceramic or other oven proof dish. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar with an electric beater until light and fluffy and there is no 'grittiness' if you rub a small amount between your fingertips. Add the egg yolks to the creamed butter and sugar and continue beating. It may curdle but don't worry. Add the zest and juice of the lemons and oranges, stir to combine. Add the flour and milk alternately and mix with a wooden spoon to just combine, until you end up with a soft, cake-like batter. In another bowl, beat the egg whites to stiff peaks then fold them carefully into the batter, being careful not to over-mix as it is the air that is going to 'rise' your sponge in the oven. Using a spatula, scrape the batter into your greased oven-proof dish so that the mixture comes about three-quarters of the way up the sides. Cook in a water bath by standing the pudding dish in a roasting dish and pouring enough boiling water into the roasting dish until it comes halfway up the sides of the pudding dish. Bake for 45 – 55 minutes, or until the top is puffed and golden and the sponge is cooked through. It should spring back to the touch. Cool for 5 minutes before serving. Serve with a small jug of pouring cream.

At 1.7 metres wide we reckon we just might be the narrowest espresso bar in NZ. So we felt Il Magro (Italian for "the skinny") was a perfect t. We only use Crafted Coffee as we feel its NZ's nest and we love it! We have amazing food, great coffee and an easy feel. We love what we do and think we are good at it. Come try and see what you think....you won't be disappointed! Opening Hours Mon - Fri 7.00am - 3.00pm Sat 8.00am - 2.00pm

Celebration of The Kentucky Derby begins well before the horses are off. This official Derby drink is made with bourbon and fresh mint. The Kentucky Derby has been said to be 'the most exciting two minutes in sports' and is woven deeply into the culture of southern America. Since the derby's humble beginnings in the 1800s, it has been the largest and most popular horse race in all of the United States. With the derby comes a tradition that has been around nearly as long as the races themselves – The Mint Julep.

Richard Uttley Glassware Traditionally, Mint Juleps were often served in silver or pewter cups, and held only by the bottom and top edges of the cup. This allows frost to form on the outside of the cup. Traditional hand placement may have arisen as a way to reduce the heat transferred from the hand to the silver or pewter cup. Today, Mint Juleps are most commonly served in a tall oldfashioned glass, Collins glass, or highball glass with a straw. Available from Total Food Equipment, Moorhouse Ave. Recipe 45 ml of Jim Beam Small Batch 6 -8 mint leaves Granulated sugar Put mint, sugar, and a small amount of bourbon into the bottom of a mixing glass. Gently muddle the mint and sugar, then let stand for a bit to allow the muddled leaves to release their flavour. Strain and pour into a julep cup (or similar vessel), rotating to coat the sides. Fill with ice; add the rest of the bourbon whiskey. Garnish with a mint sprig. Bloody Mary's is now online so check out www.bloodymarys.co.nz where they will be publishing all the Mary's Mixologist recipes on their site for easy reference.

Discover a flaming passion

T

he fresh taste of Persian cuisine is now a local flavour on Stanmore Road. The traditional recipes come from 20 years of this fresh cuisine. Arguably the first ‘kebab’ chef in Christchurch, chef Hamza brought his Persian and Turkish cuisine straight from the Middle East. Much like the flames this flavour packed fare is cooked in, this restaurant comes out of the ashes, like a phoenix, from the destruction of the Christchurch earthquakes. The owners combined passion for the business has resulted in them defying the odds and starting a business again from the ground up. When you walk through the door of the Persian Kitchen, you walk into their home. Where Elly has put her heart and soul into the front decor of the restaurant, Chef Hamza has made the kitchen his. The styling of the restaurant is a combination of Persian decoration, and an influence of traditional Persian tea rooms. The food is prepared in an orderly and immaculate kitchen, and the tastes are as clean as the benches where it was prepared. Persian and Turkish cuisine is known for its fresh spices, tender meats, and exquisite salads and the Persian Kitchen certainly delivers on flavour. You can have your meal served with seasoned rice, and salad, or encased in a bread pita. There is also the option of some warming winter fare in the Khoresh stewed dishes, which are a wonderful combination of

for flavour...

The very efficient Persian Kitchen team delicate flavours. Chef Hamza’s 20 years’ experience cooking these unique flavours shows in the way the meals are deftly prepped, cooked and presented. The restaurant also nods to Christchurch’s dining days gone by, for as well as the history Hamza has in bringing Persian and Turkish cuisine to our city, the site is the location of past dining institution Henry Africa restaurant. All meals are available as takeaway, and even though everything is cooked fresh to order, your meal is prepared in a flash – great for a guilt-free dinner grabbed on the way home. These make a fantastic on the run lunch option as well, where your kebab is served in

or Persian tea. The Persian Kitchen is tucked away behind the Red Cross shop. There is ample parking on Avalon Street, and you can either get there via Stanmore Road, or duck down Avalon Street from Hills Road. It’s open for dinner from 5pm seven days a week, and lunches Wednesday to Friday 11am to 3pm, and from 1pm on the weekend. They are also available for functions. For a special Persian cuisine experience, call in on Monday and Tuesday nights, where the kitchen makes some more traditional fare. Visit www.persiankitchen.co.nz for more information.

he Watershed has been around for seven years; always sitting on a perfect spot on an axis that feeds to central Christchurch and farther south, the eastern suburbs, Sumner and Redcliffs and the hills thereabouts. Perfect for meals, after work drinks and casual weekend collaborations, it has an appeal to all of us. Its modern architecture and water front views are alluring, with estuary vistas on one side and St Andrews Hill looming on the other. Designed with natural timber, stone and leather, the unique views from both inside and out can be enjoyed by all. It's a place where traditional meets modern. It's a place of shifting experiences, a place to seek cheerful company, great food and fine drinks. Variety is part of the experience: the rooms dogleg a little so that your group may feel a degree of separation from others, and you can be sitting at a table enjoying a quiet meal in one area, or sharing a round of drinks with family or work colleagues in another. In some

Right now the winter menu is in place, and the head chef has excelled himself. Sample a stunning variety of starters, including creamy seafood chowder, which is highly rated, or perhaps an aromatic duck confit with orange onion jam, balsamic reduction and parsnip crisps. Note that there is a good range of gluten-free options.

Mains cover the range too – chargrilled beef fillet, fresh fish, cashew crusted chicken, lamb, penne pasta, seafood risotto, savoy cabbage wraps, Thai red curry of slow cooked venison, and crispy skin salmon – it is all mouth-watering and perfect for the cooler months. To finish you can really spoil yourself. Savour, for example, crispy jaffa profiteroles, banoffi pie, white chocolate and vanilla crème brulee, affogato, warm flourless chocolate almond pudding, or perhaps a selection of cheeses, fig relish and walnut bread. The seven days brunch menu is a great crowd

pleaser – the big breakfast, eggs Benedict on toasted sour dough, cinnamon French toast, roasted field mushrooms, toasted bagels… it is all so delicious and so accessible. With mid-winter looming the Watershed is a perfect spot for a family function or an office do – solid meals or cocktail parties. On Sundays from 10.30am – 12.30pm there is entertainment for children – face painting and party balloons, Quiz nights tease the brains on Wednesdays and you can relish acoustic music on the last Sunday of each month from 4pm – 6pm. Selection of Castello Banfi wines available

t would be easy to forget that the modern day wine estate of Castello Banfi - located in the hillside town of Montalcino, Tuscany – was only established in 1978, such is the status this enterprise has ambitiously created for itself in a wine region whose roots trace back to the ancient Etruscans.

Fast forward to 1919, over two and a half thousand years on from Tuscany's early beginnings, to when Italian immigrant Giovanni Mariani established Banfi Vintners in New York's Little Italy. From a fledgling wine importation business, Banfi Vinters began to pioneer America's introduction to Italian and European wines. Succeeding their father in the now prestigious family business, brothers John and Harry Mariani set out for expansion, with a view to establishing a wine producing estate in their native homeland. The focus of their acquisition became the medieval Tuscan castle formerly known as 'Poggio alle Mura' or 'Walled Hilltop', which had fallen into a state of disrepair following World War II. For its strategic position between Sienne and the Tuscan seaside “Castello Banfi (Maremma) and the fertile soils surrounding it, the produce phenomenal Castello di Poggio alle Mura wines and we are had been contested over for thrilled to offer them centuries, before remaining under family-ownership by to NZ wine drinkers

a member of the local aristocracy for over four hundred years. In 1978, immediately after their acquisition, the Mariani's began restoring the structurally precarious property to its former splendour, thus giving birth to Castello Banfi. The present day Castello Banfi estate extends to the south of Montalcino, incorporating over seven thousand acres of land, one-third of which is under a constellation of single vineyards, the remainder occupied by olive groves, fruit trees and woodland. Will Whitby from Castello Banfi's New Zealand importer, Federal Merchants & Co, comments: “Castello Banfi produce phenomenal wines and we are thrilled to offer them to NZ wine drinkers, many of whom will have first-hand experience of Tuscany. We have purposefully tasted and chosen a small and accessible selection of their range, but we fully expect to increase this over time.” Currently available in New Zealand at selected retailers, bars and restaurants are the following Banfi wines. From the exciting territory of Bolgheri, Banfi's Aska combines Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from a specialist five hectare site. From the Tuscan coast (the Maremma), La Pettegola Vermentino is a full-bodied yet aromatic white, reminiscent of Viognier. The best value offerings come in a triumvirate: a classic Chianti DOCG and the two new-world-styled Colle Pino and Col di Sasso, blends of Merlot Sangiovese and Sangiovese Cabernet Sauvignon respectively.

New generation Canterbury home R ebuild solutions for TC3 landowners have taken on a whole new lease of life recently with the unveiling of The Cantabrian, an architecturally designed concept home. The Cantabrian has been designed specifically for construction on challenging land to deliver greater structural integrity to the house in the event of seismic activity.

A modern take on the quintessential New Zealand bungalow, The Cantabrian concept home is the inspiration of Southern Response and Nelsonbased architect Richard Sellars. Born out of a commitment by Southern Response to provide people with a solution for TC3 rebuilds that is not only structurally robust, but also appealing and attainable for the The Cantabrian concept average person. I have employed three key principles in this design; light, simplicity and spatial comfort. These are qualities that I would want to live with,” says Sellars. Construction of The Cantabrian began in late 2013 on the St Albans site. The site is representative of a typical TC3 site, both in terms

of its shape and geotechnical performance. Housing New Zealand (HNZ), which owns the Cranford Street site, agreed to lease the land to Southern Response to help kick-start The Cantabrian project. The Cantabrian concept home design has preapproved building consent (known as multiproof) which delivers greater efficiency in the entire build process and a shorter construction period overall. As a multi-proof design, The Cantabrian concept can be built anywhere in New Zealand, requiring only site-specific foundation and services details to be consented by the local authority. “The Cantabrian concept home is a starting point, not an end in itself”, says Rose. “Other versions of The Cantabrian will undoubtedly evolve within the structural framework of this new style of home. It is an exciting beginning for future Cantabrian homes,” he added. The Cantabrian concept home, situated at 81 Cranford Street in St Albans, is open to the public Monday through to Saturday 12pm-2pm.

Landscaping W

– your property’s vital first impression

hen it comes to property, first impressions really do count. So whether you’re landscaping a residential or commercial property, it’s important to make it look the part. Goom Landscapes has been helping homes and businesses put their best foot forward for more than 30 years.

Under the formative guidance and direction of renowned landscape designer Chris Goom, the team grew to become one of the country’s leading architectural landscaping firms. Today the company is in the hands of Chris’s son Tim Goom and son in law Anthony Washington and business is still blooming. Tim joined Goom Landscapes 10 years ago, purchasing the business from Chris with the general manager at the time, Roger Martin. Anthony had recently exited the horticultural export business he had for 12 years when the opportunity came up to purchase Roger’s share in June. The complementary skill set makes for a strong partnership. While Tim heads design and construction, Anthony brings strong managerial skills to the business. “This is an exciting time in Christchurch,” Anthony says. “Goom Landscapes is known for its design consistency. People know what a Goom job is and we will continue to build on this strong reputation. I am looking forward to playing a strong role in this evolution.” For many, landscape design is the afterthought of an otherwise well planned project and there’s great benefit to integrating house and garden design at the earliest stages, Anthony says. “Not only can planning ahead save time and money, it

assists in overcoming design challenges, ensuring you can make the most of your property.” Over the years, Goom Landscapes has undertaken a wide variety of residential and rural property projects as well as specialising in the landscape design of land development, subdivisions and commercial properties, with a number of high-profile local and national projects. “Our portfolio includes award winning

subdivisions, master planning, greenfield developments, institutional and commercial developments, which are all areas we are keen to expand further,” Tim says. “We are in the process of landscape construction of the large campus style development for Tait Electronics on Wairakei Road and we are well placed to carry out any aspect from design and architecture through to construction, planting and even on-going maintenance.” By listening to what the client wants and incorporating the kind of design wisdom that can only come from years of experience in the field, Goom Landscapes can ensure your project is the best it can be, no matter how big

or small. “We’ve been in the game a long time,” Tim says. “So we know what works.” Backed up by a strong team of 30 with an immense knowledge base, Goom Landscapes is in a competitive position going forward. The office, at 200 Fendalton Road near the corner of Clyde Road, is a platform for design and construction to come together under one roof; a space where ideas develop from pencil to soil. By bringing together the two divisions, the company has developed a springboard for ideas, with the design and construction teams feeding off each other to ensure a seamless process. And, when it comes to getting the best result for your landscape, seamless is exactly what you want. “We’ve had a change of ownership, but it’s business as usual,” Anthony says. For more information on what Goom Landscaping can achieve for your home or business, phone (03) 351 6100 or visit www.goomlandscapes.co.nz.

It’s the finish that counts

e’ve been primed to look more than skin deep because, ‘it’s what’s on the inside that counts’. But when it comes to our home furnishings nothing could be further from the truth.

For our kitchens, bathrooms, vanities, wardrobes and joinery, it’s all about a quality finish. And let’s face it, when it comes to our homes, first impressions really do count. Murray and Monique Turnbull have long understood the importance of a quality finish. The husband and wife team established specialist finishing firm MF Turnbull 26 years ago to fill a gap in the market, offering finishing and refinishing work for new builds, renovations or one-off projects. Quite simply, there’s not a lot within a commercial or residential space that MF Turnbull won’t turn its finishing skills to. “We felt the market needed someone who specialised solely on the finishing aspect,” Monique says. “We can finish or refinish just about anything that can be painted.” It’s become a case of doing one thing and being the best at it. Not only can the specialist crew finish new cabinetry, but they can refinish existing kitchens, bathrooms, vanities, wardrobes and joinery, as well as commercial applications such as bars and offices. If your coffee table, kitchen cabinetry or wall unit is looking tired and dated, MF Turnbull can repaint it. Even melamine kitchens can be recoated, making them look

Kitchen refinishing has received a boost in popularity since earthquake repairs began, with clients wanting to update the kitchen to suit the new paint job. But it doesn’t stop there. Transform your old furniture with a modern twist on colour or make them look brand new again, get your wall unit to match the new lounge colour scheme – the options really are quite endless. And you’re not restricted to paint finishes, with stains, lacquers, textured coatings and high gloss urethanes also available.

“You’re really only limited by your imagination,” Murray says. “We find solutions for clients who want a specific look or perhaps they are unsure how to achieve what they want.” The company had two workshops however lost the Bower Avenue premises following the earthquakes. Increased demand has seen MF Turnbull open a new Woolston factory on Barton Street to complement the existing Mowbray Street factory, utilising the same high quality products and imported bake

ovens which create the superior results they are renowned for. Strong staff training is behind that quality finish and MF Turnbull is focused on putting staff members through national qualifications. The ongoing apprenticeship programme reflects the importance of giving back to the industry. To contact this innovative spraying specialist visit the Waltham office at 46 Mowbray Street, phone (03) 365 2519 or visit www.mfturnbull.co.nz to find out more.

At a time when people have experienced earthquake damage to their homes and contents, refurbishing existing furniture or an inherited item can be very satisfying and often gives it a new lease of life for years to come. Proud of the intricacy and quality of workmanship, “our forte is the re-upholstery of

furniture from antique to modern, and no job is too big or too small,” says Keith. Once fabrics have been selected and sourced, your furniture is picked up for meticulous transformation! Following an examination of the frame, springs and webbing and any repair or replacement required, all foam is fibre-wrapped for smoothness and comfort. What you need...

an extra pair of hands

H

ow I could use an extra pair of hands!” How often have you cried out those words as you try to juggle housework with your job or gardening with looking after the children? Well, that extra pair of hands is now available in the form of the newest home services company to arrive on the Christchurch block. Its name couldn’t be anything else but “An Extra Pair of Hands” and those hands are top calibre residential cleaners and gardeners. “I am extremely particular about whom I employ and select only those people I would be happy to have in my own home,” says Jane Richardson, who started this company in Palmerston North eleven years ago. “All our team members are thoroughly screened before joining the team. They then complete a training programme so that I can be sure our clients will receive the kind of high quality service they expect. It’s the level of service I would want myself. We are also an accredited sustainable company. Our procedures went through a rigorous assessment and all of our products are certified eco-friendly.”

Services are comprehensive - from regular house cleans to spring and special occasion cleans, from window cleaning, ironing and oven cleaning to running errands, garden maintenance and house washing. The rigorous recruitment process and quality control has certainly paid off and An Extra Pair of Hands has grown considerably since its establishment with a current

complement of 30 staff. Besides Palmerston North, the company now has branches in Feilding, Wellington, Hutt Valley and the Kapiti Coast with Christchurch the latest location to benefit from its range of services. Those services are comprehensive - from regular house cleans to spring and special occasion cleans, from window cleaning, ironing and oven cleaning to running errands, garden maintenance and house washing. They even offer holiday home maintenance, heat pump cleaning and seasonal services, such as clearing and cleaning gutters and waterblasting outdoor furniture, paths and driveways. Especially to support elderly clients so they can enjoy the independence of living in their own home, An Extra Pair of Hands provides a tailored service including grocery purchasing, mediation reminders and gift buying. “Our services are specifically tailored to suit a client’s requirements and lifestyle. When someone makes an enquiry our team leader will visit them to discuss how we can help and all the services are arranged at the one time. After the team has worked at a house a few times the team leader will visit again to get the client’s feedback, to monitor the quality of the work and to make any adjustments that might be required.” An Extra Pair of Hands also has a commitment to equal employment opportunities and some 10% of its employees

are people with disabilities – mainly hearingimpaired. An Extra Pair of Hands can be contacted on 0800 535 535, or through their website www.anextrapairofhands.co.nz. An additional touch is that that they sell gift vouchers. Oven cleaning vouchers are the most popular ones, particularly around Mother’s Day.

Luxury and style underfoot J acqui Kuru and Alex Ward, consummate showroom consultants, are the faces of Dominion Flooring for residential customers. Dominion Flooring has a long and proud history in Christchurch with its beginnings way back in 1946.

Alex Ward and Jacqui Kuru

“It’s an honour to be part of such a fine tradition,” says Jacqui who has a diploma in Interior Design. “As with all other members of this company, Alex and I place a great deal of emphasis on taking a professional approach to every aspect of our work, whether it involves carpet, carpet tiles, wood flooring, laminate flooring, vinyl or polished concrete.” As selected stockists of New Zealand’s most recognised brands of carpet, including Godfrey Hirst, Feltex and Cavalier Bremworth, Dominion Flooring is able to provide customers with a wide selection of quality products backed by a fully guaranteed installation service. The same applies to wood flooring. Dominion are proud to have been selected as one of the key suppliers of the internationally acclaimed Ekowood range of engineered hardwood flooring and Eternity timber flooring underlay with its industryleading acoustic and moisture barrier features. Jacqui and Alex have a real depth of knowledge of all these products and are able to comprehensively advise customers on

which ones will work in their home environment to achieve the look they are wanting. “We keep in touch with the latest trends and developments in the flooring industry so we can meet customers’ needs and expectations. We offer that little bit extra to our customers. Not only do we help them with their selection of flooring, but we personally go to their homes to take the measurements and we follow up after the installation. So we are building relationships with our customers right through the process.” It is not unreasonable to expect that such superb service and experience might cost a little more. Not the case. In actual fact not only will Dominion Flooring provide a free measure and quote, but you will be pleasantly surprised at how competitive they are. Today Dominion Flooring is still run by the third generation of a family with flooring roots going back almost 90 years. Although not part of the family, Jacqui and Alex are testament to ethics of the company and to the sense of pride in the way things are done at Dominion

An architectural language of our own Architect Cymon Allfrey ponders whether green field thinking is the way forward when it comes to designing buildings in Christchurch…

Cymon Allfrey

H

aving recently attended the Australian Institute of Architects conference in Perth I found myself faced with an architectural concept that has continued to resonate with me.

Keynote speaker architect David Adjaye was architecturally, a city or a whole country, if born in Tanzania before moving to Britain at an united by climate and history will have a unique early age. Despite being internationally identity. acclaimed for a number of his public buildings, While it was an interesting concept to listen including the Museum of Contemporary Art in to, and fascinating to think someone can Denver, Adjaye has spent a large part of his understand a whole continent at this level, it got career studying the me thinking about architecture of Africa, and Christchurch and how we Why are we not taking looking at the contextual could apply it here. relationship between Why is it that we stand the cues from our geographically separated on a rural site and look for natural terrain and cities. cues from the natural Despite there being environment and climate climate? If we were to over fifty countries within to inform our design do this, then perhaps the continent, Adjaye decisions, when in the we could create a identified the architecture city we look to the built of the continent was environment? Despite the unique, architectural divided into only six two sites being separated response in the rebuild terrains. His study geographically they both of our city. illustrated that when a site present with the same is stripped back to the climatic issues, so why do climatic and historical conditions of the naked we treat them differently? If we were to look at area, the response to solve these challenges is a 20 acre block of land with a swamp in the similar, despite the political and social middle, we wouldn't build in the swamped area, conditions of the sites being extraordinarily yet in the city we have drained swamps and put different; and in many cases the geographical measures in place to maintain this new distances being vast. He identified that condition.

For the best pot deal in town!

We need to step back and consider the bigger picture, how would we deal with the inner city site if it was a green field? We need to be influenced by the right cues in order to ensure we are building homes that have been informed ‘correctly’, rather than by fashion. Why are we not taking the cues from our natural terrain and climate? If we were to do this, then perhaps we could create a unique, architectural response in the rebuild of our city. Urban design is essentially a set of rules, which govern how our built environment is to be constructed as a whole. Informed by the study of people and how they respond to space, urban design has long been a key influence in the ‘look’ of the city. So as we rebuild our city how are we finding the balance between urban design and ensuring we are crafting a building, which has taken its cues from not only, needs and wants, but geological, climatic and historical influences? In 2010-13 we worked on a building in Victoria Street which, in accordance to urban design, had to be set four metres back from the street to allow for a landscaped edge. Now, the city plan requires buildings along this same street to be built to the edge of the street, to encourage greater engagement between the building and pedestrians. This highlights the fact that urban design principles continue to evolve. While urban design ensures people are engaging and responding positively to public

spaces and architecture, nowhere does it encourage the underlying geology of the site influence and inform the design. We should be stripping back social and political boundaries and looking at the inherent properties of the land. We then would no longer see architectural fashion to be the primary influence of what was being built in our city. As a direct result of climate, we don’t see Swiss Chalet’s being built in Thailand, yet we do see these fashion influences driving architectural design in Christchurch. We should be looking deeper for cues from the site, in order to create unique architectural responses that are distinctly Christchurch. We need to strip back to green fields and create our own architectural language. www.caarc.co.nz.

home “Drapes are an investment and the right window dressing can change the look of even the simplest of homes and make it beautiful and sophisticated.”

Beautiful drapes to refresh your home It’s very busy at Off the Track Curtains on Westminster Street. The first thing you sense as you walk through the door of the 100-year-old wooden character house is a productive buzz as customers talk with staff about fabrics and the soft whirr of sewing machines permeates the air.

W

hat makes this such a satisfying place is that everyone is focussed and working together on the same goal – doing the very best they can for customers who are either building new homes, rebuilding damaged homes or refurbishing their drapes as part of earthquake repairs. One of the key collaborations is between Off the Track and Impact Marketing which supplies some of the beautiful fabrics that Off the Track delights in showing to customers. Kate Blair, the manager of Off the Track and Lynn Williams of Impact Marketing have an excellent working relationship - two local businesses with a passion for fabrics and the stunning end products that are created from them. “We supply Off the Track with fabrics from leading brands Gummerson, Hoad and JW Design,” says Lynn. “These fabrics are sourced from all over the world and within our ranges there is a price point suitable for everyone’s budget. We specialise in fabrics that are just that little bit different. Take the fresh-coloured Summer Sheers fabric from Hoad for example. This fabric has a linen look, but is actually 100% polyester. Customers will get the effect of linen, but without the higher price tag. Then there are the ginghams, checks and stripes from the China Seas range. This is a versatile cotton and

polyester fabric that is especially great for kids’ and teenagers’ rooms. Off the Track is expanding its samples’ viewing space to accommodate even more fabric and books. “We are finding that people are happy to spend more on their drape materials so they achieve the look they want,” Kate explains. “Drapes are an investment and the right window dressing can change the look of even the simplest of homes and make it beautiful and sophisticated.” The service offered at Off the Track is very personal. Kate herself visits customers’ homes to measure up and assists with advice on the appropriate fabrics for different environments. Off the Track also sell recycled curtains. This is a costeffective way of completing a new look to a re-furbished room, especially when they can be given a new lease of life with stylish tracks, rails and fittings. lue Scarlet’s “Pop Up” shop at 78 Buchan Street in Sydenham is a riot of colour. It’s a kaleidoscope of oranges and pinks, blues and greens, purples and reds, but then this is the very essence of Blue Scarlet. It’s a furniture, interior design and homewares business that has colour at its very core. “Blue Scarlet is all about strong and vibrant colour,” says Lou Barker, owner and interior designer. With this in mind she has redesigned and resurrected retro pieces of furniture with “good bones” including armchairs, sofas, dining chairs, stools and headboards. Currently in store is an absolutely stunning pair of armchairs reupholstered in orange velvet that would sit comfortably in an already colourful home or

add “wow” against a neutral decor. To complement the furniture Blue Scarlet sells gorgeous homewares including cushions, lampshades and artworks, as well as offering an interior design service. There’s a wonderful quirkiness to Blue Scarlet that is very much its signature so it's no surprise that Lou also stocks iconic “Bobbin Bicycles” - Dutch style steel bikes and accessories. And of course they too come in every colour you can imagine! Blue Scarlet’s Pop Up shop is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10am – 2pm, and you can also shop on line at www.bluescarlet.co.nz any time.

he past year has been not only exciting and fun, but a great learning experience too,” says Michelle Taylor, owner of Presence Gift Shop. That’s because since taking over Presence a year ago Michelle has implemented many changes, especially with the layout of the store so customers have more space to browse in this wonderful treasure trove. “We know that many people are looking for bargains, so we stock a great array of quality items at very good prices. We also buy varieties of stock regularly rather than buying items in bulk. This has a number of advantages – our customers have more choices, they aren’t going to go to their neighbours and see the same thing, and we keep the

They have also just landed the “Indulge” oil range and some delightful “Hear no evil; See no evil; Speak no evil” monks, along with a few amazing wall art pieces. The staff at Presence pride themselves on having the perfect gift whether it be for someone special or for you. ”That’s the best kind of gift,” Michelle reckons. Presence is located just opposite the Redwood library at 290 Main North Road. Opening hours are Monday Friday 9.30am – 5pm and Saturday 10am - 2pm. There is ample parking at the rear of the store.

Seductive, enjoyable grand tourer W

hen Aston Martin launched their first four-door GT car some time back in 2010, it became clear of the company's intentions to take on Maserati and Mercedes at their own game. Now the Rapide has undergone some automotive nip and tuck in the form of the Rapide S. While still retaining the gorgeous line of the previous car, a few stylistic tweaks separate the S from the regular Rapide, the most noticeable being the wider and deeper front grill. Bi-xenon headlights up front, 20-inch 10 spoke alloy wheels, LED lamps at the rear look great while a lip spoiler at the rear and red S emblem give the game away. You would be right in thinking the Rapide S shares the same interior layout with other cars in the Aston family. While everything is well laid out and easy to find, you still need fingers like toothpicks to properly operate some of the switches. Entry for driver and front passenger is easy, though those in the rear of lofty build may struggle. Once in though, you feel cocooned by your surroundings and ready for the journey ahead.

Aside from regular features like GPS, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity etc, a six disc DVD player with seat mounted screens for rear passengers is an optional extra. No Aston is complete without a beefy beating heart of an engine, and in the Rapide S we find the legendary 6.0-litre 48 valve V12. Power has gone up re the previous car, which now sits at a whopping 405kW and 620Nm of torque. Aston's second generation six-speed Touchtronic automatic gearbox is also in

attendance. Put all this together and the Rapide S is no slouch. With a top speed of 306km/h, you will arrive at 100km/h from a standstill in 4.7 seconds. Underneath, an adaptive damping system comes as standard, allowing you to choose from three modes, normal, sport and track. However while the track may not be its natural stomping ground, the open road certainly is. On the road it becomes clear the Rapide S is no razor sharp sports car, but more of a hard charging ground coverer. Up and down on the touch tronic box is better than the standard car,

but can be noisy. Talking of noise, the V12 heart sings the classic Aston 12 cylinder ballad at whatever the revs. Lots of positive feedback from perfectly weighted steering means you know exactly what the back end is up to. While you can drive hard on a twisty B-road, motorway cruising is where the Rapide S feels at home. Despite costing $309,190, the Aston Martin Rapide S is a wonderful car, resulting in one of the most seductive and enjoyable grand tourers on sale today. 007 fan boys queue here.

New MGs stylish, fun & amazing value

P

aul Wallace European, the South Island’s only authorised dealer for new MG cars, is proud to be offering a second exciting model to southern motorists. The brand new MG3 is a fun and stylish five door hatch offering unrivalled specifications for a touch under $20,000. “Naturally we are excited about the recent introduction to the New Zealand market of the brand new MG3, and its popularity finds us struggling to keep up with demand, although as this issue of Metropol goes to print, we expect another shipment to arrive,” says Paul. With a massive standard specification list that includes creature comforts like leather trim and electronic air conditioning, convenience features like auto lights, auto wipers, parking sensors and cruise control as well as modern technology such as bluetooth phone connectivity and music streaming with smartphone docking compatibility, this MG3 has to be streets ahead of its competitors. The MG3 has all of this wrapped in a funky wedge-shaped package complete with stylish body kit, with 16 inch diamond alloy wheels and LED daytime running lights. As you would expect this great value

package has all the modern safety features and is covered by a full three year/100,000kms factory backed warranty. The result is not only something which will appeal to those of us who appreciated the wonderful MGs of the sixties and seventies, but to a new younger MG buyer as well - a wonderful mixture of tradition and style with modern appeal, accessories and performance. This package at that price will mean we see a lot more MGs on New Zealand roads. Let’s not forget the five door fastback MG6 GT which has become a familiar sight on our roads. The MG6 GT also offers unrivalled style, specifications and value for money. Recently voted the best handling car in the UK by Auto Express readers in the 2014 Driver

Power survey, 50,000 car owners voted, and the MG6 came out on top in the handling category with a 98% approval rating. It also scooped a top 10 placing in the overall percentage ratings. The MG6 GT starts at a mere $24990, and offering three spec levels with the top spec MG6 GT TSE topping out at $29990, the MG 6 offers incredible value for money. It was reported by Fairfax recently as being listed in the top five family cars for under $30,000. Both of these fabulous New MG models can be found at Paul Wallace Europeans Showroom on the corner of Moorhouse Ave and Montreal Streets. Christchurch's boutique European dealership Paul Wallace European is a family owned and operated business. Paul has over 23 years’ experience retailing European cars providing a proven record in customer service and a wealth of knowledge and passion for all European Marques.

Perky Kia boasts brilliant steering I t is the first thing you have to touch on when writing, talking or even thinking about the new Kia pro_cee'd GT - the awkward combination of letters and punctuation that make up its name.If I were to hazard a guess, my money would be on the odd name coming about due to a catastrophic mistake in the badging department that saw an excess of chrome underscores and apostrophes being ordered.

Whatever the reason, it is a very silly name and its very existence on a page simply makes your brain hurt. For that reason alone I shall simply refer to the newest Kia on the block as the Proceed GT from this point on. Trust me, your brain will thank me for The steering is unencumbered by it. However, despite the any artificially weighted “modes” fact that it has a very silly name, the Proceed and is simply delightful, easily GT is actually Kia's first boasting the best feel and serious attempt at a proper performance feedback we have ever hatch.

The Proceed GT will be coming to New Zealand as a single model - a three-door hatch with a 150kW/265Nm 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo experienced in a Korean car. engine driving the front wheels through a sixspeed manual transmission. The Proceed GT comes standard with adaptive xenon headlights with automatic levelling, smart cornering lights and “ice cube” quad LED daytime running lights, a rear spoiler with an LED brake light, LED taillights, electric heated door mirrors, leather and suede Recaro sports seats, a leather multifunction steering wheel, keyless start, a backing camera and rear parking sensors, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise

control with a speed limiter function, a sixspeaker audio unit with USB and auxiliary inputs, a chilled glovebox, red mood lighting, auto defog and rain-sensing wipers. The three-door hatch body is distinctly European in its styling (which is no surprise,

given it was designed and is built in Europe) and has a strong presence on the road, especially with the big alloy wheels. With only the single engine/transmission combination available, your exterior colour choices are also limited, with black, silver, red or white being your options. The Proceed GT lands in New Zealand at a very reasonable $43,990.The engine feels perkier and far more eager than it does in the Kia Cerato Koup that shares it, largely thanks to the sixspeed manual transmission and this, teamed up with the fantastic chassis, makes the Proceed GT an absolute delight to throw down a winding back road. The steering is unencumbered by any artificially weighted “modes” and is simply delightful, easily boasting the best feel and feedback we have ever experienced in a Korean car. While the lack of an automatic transmission and the three-door body may hold it back in terms of ultimate sales numbers, the Proceed GT has a lot of what it takes to make it a serious performance hatch. It may not have the outright grunt of the European competition (VW Golf GTi, Ford Focus ST, etc), but neither does it have their price tag. What it does have is brilliant steering, a great chassis and fantastic looks, and that will be more than enough for most people.

Ground-breaking, tailor-made electric vehicle

W

hat BMW claim as being the future of sustainable personal mobility has been shown for the first time in New Zealand. The allnew fully electric BMW i3 has been unveiled at BMW New Zealand's head office in Auckland where local automotive media had the opportunity to see the new model up close. The left hand drive model, on loan from BMW, will be used as part of a display to showcase BMW electric technology before the i3's official launch in November this year. “The new BMW i3 is a groundbreaking model for us as it is a tailor-made electric vehicle constructed from a clean sheet design. This enabled engineers to utilise new light-weight construction techniques, such as extensive use of carbon-fibre, as well as creating an extremely functional and safe passenger cell,” said Managing Director of BMW New Zealand, Nina Englert. “The BMW i3 will have a drive away price from $83,500, which includes three year scheduled

servicing and a five year warranty as standard,” said Ms Englert. Utilising a plug in system via a BMW i wall box home charger, BMW claim charge time for the i3 is between three and six hours and will provide motorists with a 150km of pure electric driving. With a range extender, the overall range will increase to 340km maximum. The i3 produces 12kW and 250Nm of torque, covering the zero to 100km/h sprint in 7.9 seconds. “The BMW i3 will have a particular appeal for people and businesses who want to make a real statement with regards to their green credentials,” said Ms Englert.

Utilising a plug in system via a BMW i wall box home charger, BMW claim charge time for the i3 is between three and six hours and will provide motorists with a 150km of pure electric driving. The i3 will be part of the German firm's i subbrand and dealers around the world are having a new look and feel introduced alongside the new i products. The first in New Zealand to benefit from these changes will be Team McMillan BMW in Auckland. “There are specific requirements involved in
